"Irony is jesting behind hidden gravity" John Weiss

Here we are again at another weekend, but nothing can be simple can it?  This weekend, we run into a bit of snag, it happened Friday morning...here's the story.  As we did with the first two kids, their dad gets invited to do a building project at school...they both made birdhouses.  Now it's been a few years, and they changed the plan.  This year, they made kites.  The twins were pretty excited and the building part went fine.  Then off they go to fly them...I did not realize it would be an "Extreme Kite Flying" kind of day.  Being the super dad that he is, he is off and running, and that's when my dear hubby hurts his foot.  I went at the usual time to pick up the boys.  I find him limping...as he describes the incident, I insist we go get it checked.  Sure enough, it's got a big crack, but not completely broken, and now he is in a cast for 3 weeks.  We are also experiencing some amazing weather, perfect for roof repair...no rain for a few days.  He is still confident he can get this done.

So as he finished prepping the roof, a lot of scraping, and cleaning off the old stuff...I leave to go find the required items...not an easy task.  And a lot of walking, something I knew he could not be attempting the day after the cast.   I never knew the worst part would be the shopping, and that finding experienced people in ALL the hardware/home improvement stores to be my biggest challenge.  Seeking their expertise,  I was told to buy all the wrong things.

Since we wanted to remove and replace all the material, and assuming we need to buy the same product...I went to all the stores with a wad of what we removed...because we did not know what it was called.  I described what it came from, and what I was looking for.  I was told I needed different types of, "Plumbers Putty"...this was wrong.  Now here I am at the end of Saturday, I came home, to do what I should have done in the first place...research some brand names, and see what google can tell me.  Also realized I should have gone to an RV repair place, but now that is too late, and all RV repair locations here close on Sundays as well.   I was needing insulation, wood, screws etc...so I had to go there, and my mind assumed I should be able to find all of  this stuff in any hardware store...that is no.

Back at home, my hubby did however get the other things in place and done...going up and down the ladder with a cast is no easy thing...again a real trouper.  So Sunday I start all over...already knowing the RV places are closed, I was hoping to luck out at the auto repair places, or finding another google recommended product, a specific automotive sealant., of course no one has it.  Finally at Princess Auto, I find the stuff I've been searching for, in their RV section.  Butyl Rubber...finally., and I make my way back home.

So first we replaced the rotten wood, scraped out all old seam sealer, and started to apply the new Butyl Tape, and screw the roof back together.

Here are the pictures from the weekend.

Opened it right up.

The wood is different sizes due to the curve in the roof.

Here is what we googled, and was able to find.  You want to find Butyl Rubber, they also make a Butyl Putty...according to what we read, Putty of any kind is wrong.  It was easy to use.

It's been a long day, and now for a much deserved break...good job :)
